KanyarKali

KanyarKali കണ്യാര്‍കളി is a festival usually celebrated in March or April in many of the Kurumba Bhagavathy temples or Tharas (local meeting places) in the Palakkad district of Kerala, India.

The Kanyarkali (also known as Desathukali) are fast moving, militant dances attuned to rhythmic devotional folk songs and asuravadyas[1]. They are said to originate from the pursuit of martial arts when the region was under threat of attack from nearby Konganadu. Kannyarkali arose when dance and comedy were added to the martial training sessions[2]. The dances may be performed in the ritualistic Vattakkali style, or the more relaxed Porattu style.

Onathallu or Avittathallu

Onathallu or Avittathallu is a festival celebrated by the Nairs of Pallassana Desham in the Chittur Thaluk in Palakkad district,in the southernmost state of Kerala , India. This is a tradition followed by the Nairs of the Pallassane Desham incomemoration of the numerous wars they led and fought as part of the army of the Kolathiris. The name Pallassana is derived from the attribute that they were the Pallava Sena or the Pallava Army which eventually morphed into Pallassana or Pallasena as it is known today.
The tradition involves an enactment or warlike performances by men of the Nair community at the Vettakaruman Dewaswom temle premises. The key part of the performance had men paring up and under the guidance and supervision of elders in the community, enacting physical combat, warcries and battlelike behaviour. This is seen as a vazhivaadu by the men involved and is a highly reverred and attended festival during the Avittam nakshatra of Onam.
